Ordering

So you're thinking about ordering a cake?

To help us provide an accurate quotation and answer your enquiry as quickly as possible, there are a few things it helps to think about before getting in touch.

1.  When do you need the cake?

The date is usually the first thing we'll need to know. As a guide, we recommend booking at least 6 weeks in advance, particularly during busy periods. However, it's always worth asking, as we will do our best to accommodate last-minute orders where possible.

2.  How many people would you like the cake to serve?

The size of your cake will depend on the number of portions required. If you're unsure, take a look at our portion guide for help choosing the right size for your celebration.

3.  What style of cake are you looking for?

Whether you have a clear vision or just a few ideas, we'd love to hear about them. The design of a cake has a significant impact on the amount of time involved in creating it, so details are helpful when preparing a quotation. If you have photographs of cakes you like, feel free to send them to us.

We won't copy another cake exactly, but they can be a useful starting point and help us understand the style, colours and overall look you're hoping to achieve.

4.  Have you thought about flavours?

From classic Victoria sponge and rich chocolate cake to more unusual flavour combinations, we offer a wide range of delicious options. You don't need to make a final decision straight away, but it can be helpful to have an idea of the flavours you'd like us to include.

5.  Would you like to collect your cake or have it delivered?

Most cakes can be collected from our shop in Eastbourne. Delivery is available on many orders over £150 and can be particularly useful for larger or more delicate cakes. Local delivery is typically £10, with additional charges for longer distances. Deliveries on Sundays and Bank Holidays may incur an additional fee.

Still not sure?
Don't worry if you haven't decided everything yet. We're always happy to guide you through the process and help you create the perfect cake for your celebration.

A few things about our style...

A Few Things About Our Style Every cake maker has their own style, and ours has always been creating cakes that are unique, artistic and completely tailored to the person they are for.

Of course, we create elegant white wedding cakes, contemporary designs and cakes with clean, simple lines. However, we specialise in bespoke cakes rather than basic celebration cakes with minimal decoration. If you're looking for a plain iced cake with a short message on top, we may not be the right cake company for you – and that's perfectly okay.  You may want to check out our buttercream cakes section for simple brthday cakes.

What we love is taking an idea, a hobby, a memory, a favourite film, a beloved pet or even just a colour scheme and transforming it into something truly special. Some of our favourite projects begin with a customer saying, "I don't really know what I want..." and then working together to create something far beyond what either of us first imagined.

Between us, we have degrees in Graphic Design and Fine Art, and over 17 years of professional cake-making experience. Designing and creating extraordinary cakes isn't just what we do – it's what we genuinely enjoy. Every cake is an opportunity to create something unique.

One of the most rewarding moments is seeing a customer's reaction when they collect their cake. We have had laughter, tears, hugs, and more than a few moments of complete disbelief. Hearing "It's even better than I imagined!" never gets old. Because every cake is designed and made to order, there is an element of trust involved. You're investing in something that doesn't yet exist, and we never take that responsibility lightly. For celebration cakes, we require a 50% non-refundable deposit to secure your booking, with the balance due before collection or delivery. Wedding cake bookings work slightly differently and will be discussed during your consultation.

Before any deposit is taken, we will provide a quotation and discuss the design with you in detail. If you're ordering in person, we'll often sketch out ideas together so that we both have a clear understanding of the finished cake.

And if you're feeling nervous before collection day, don't worry – you're not the only one! While customers are hoping they'll love the finished cake, we're just as excited (and perhaps a little nervous ourselves) to see their reaction.

Choosing Between Buttercream and Fondant Cakes

In recent years, our buttercream cakes have become increasingly popular, and it's easy to see why. They have a relaxed, contemporary style and can look beautiful with nothing more than a personalised message on top.

Fondant-covered cakes are a little different. Creating a fondant cake involves additional layers of preparation, including ganaching, covering and finishing the cake to achieve a smooth, flawless result. This process takes considerably longer and requires additional materials and structural support.

For this reason, we generally recommend fondant cakes when a design calls for decorative details such as sugar models, handcrafted flowers, intricate patterns or themed decorations. These elements really showcase the craftsmanship involved and help make the most of the additional work that goes into creating a fondant cake.

If you're looking for a stylish cake with a simple message, one of our buttercream designs will often give you a beautiful result at a lower cost.

FAQs

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions to help you with your order:
Can I have a cake for today?
No.
We have a counter full of brownies, flapjacks, cupcakes, muffins, slices of cake but if you want a birthday cake, it will be made for you.  It doesn't exist until you book it in.
We don't have birthday cakes in our counter.
Can I have a cake for tomorrow?
No.
Each cake is baked to order. They are not pre-baked or frozen, waiting for an order to come in.  We believe that every cake should be baked with care and attention and to the requirements of the design.  We don't bake hundreds of cakes a week; we are not a bakery, or a factory. We are 2 skilled cake makers, making each and every order specifically for each customer.
Can I have a cake for next week?
Probably not, but it's always worth an ask.

We are generally fully booked for the week ahead, but if we can squeeze you in, we will.
Do you make Gluten free or Vegan cakes?
Yes, we do. All our cake flavours can be made Gluten free. There are different options for Vegan cakes, and some are unsuitable for certain dseigns, so just let us know and we can advise accordingly. All our cakes are Vegetarian.
Can I have a just simple cake?
It depends on what you mean by "simple".  If you mean a plain white cake with a message on top then, on principle, no.  This is not what we do.  There are plenty of other cake makers out there who will make something like that for you.  We make elaborate, amazing  and wonderful cakes, but we also make elegant, sophisticated and sleek cakes that may look simple but take a great deal of skill and expertise.  And we can only make so many each week.  We don't want to fill our time with orders which don't excite and challenge us, only to turn down a would-be incredible design if we can't fit it in.
Is my deposit refundable?
Unfortunately, no. Sorry. If it were, there would be no point of taking a deposit in the first place! Once you have paid the deposit, your booking is secure and the price we have quoted you is fixed. We are only a small team and are only able to take on a certain number of cakes for each week. We often turn customers away as we get fully booked well in advance. So if you cancel your cake, we could have already turned down multiple potential customers for that spot and as we get nearer the date the less likely it will be that we can re-fill your spot. The deposit also covers time spent on designs and correspondance.
How long does it take to make a cake?
So imagine a cake is booked in, to be collected on a saturday. We will start on Monday or Tuesday depending on how long we think it will take to decorate the cake.
Day 1: Bake cake. Let cake cool and settle overnight.
Day 2: Layer cake with buttercream. Let settle overnight.
Day 3: Trim cake and cover with crumb coat. Cover with icing.
Day 4 & 5: Decorate. 1 to 2 days of decorating depending on the complexity of the cake.
Can I invent my own flavour?
Yes, if you can afford to pay for the extra time and ingredients to experiment with recipies until we reach the perfect combination of flavour, texture and size. Otherwise, there's a list of about 16 different flavours to choose from. If it's an easy swap, for example, Biscoff spread instead of salted caramel, then we can be quite flexible. But if it's just something you've seen on Instagram then it may not be suitable for making into a celebration cake. Banana cake for example, discolours too quickly; apple is too soggy; the water contant of cream cheese icing is too high. The flavours we have on our list have been tried and tested for all the properties that make an excellent cake not just for eating but for texture, structure, longevity and taste. And trying new recipies, over and over again to perfect them does take time. We are always adding new recipes to our repertoire, so if we keep being asked for a certain flavour, we will get the hint!
